Teeth Whitening Dos and Don’ts

It seems like people are always looking for different ways to whiten their teeth. There are so many tips out there for DIY teeth whitening but it’s important to do your research before trying them. Sometimes natural teeth whitening can do more harm than good.

One idea is that apple cider vinegar and certain fruits help to whiten teeth because of the acid they contain. While fruit is a great choice to eat, it’s not so great to leave fruit or vinegar on your teeth for a longer length of time because the acid can wear away your enamel. Your enamel is actually the part of your teeth that gets whitened so if it wears away your teeth will begin to look yellow. Some methods include scrubs with whitening ingredients but that too can have the same affect.

At-home bleaching has shown to be the most effective. The bleach is usually a gel that goes into a custom made tray that fits your mouth. At-home bleaching is nice because you can do it as much or as little as you want to get the perfect shade. Most people are familiar with whitening strips which have the same concept. But, at the end of the day, white teeth starts with a good everyday homecare routine. Brushing twice a day and flossing in between teeth is crucial for a white smile. Also, avoid foods that can stain your teeth.

Everybody’s teeth are different so consult your dentist to see what whitening techniques will work best for you. I mean, who doesn’t want a whiter smile?
